Belize did not become independent because Guatemala finally agreed that we should. Independence came while the territorial dispute remained unresolved. Four days later, Belize entered the United Nations by a vote of 144 to 1. Understanding that history changes how we think about sovereignty, recognition and the dispute that remains before us today.
